Ethanol is an important chemical product, which is widely used in pharmacy, war industry, chemical industry, food industry etc. It is also used as a clean additive of high octane gasoline. In addition, with the increasing demand of clean energy sources, which can take the place of fossil oil, the demand of ethanol is growing year by year. What’s more, the world is facing the problem of excess production capacity of acetic acid and its price keeps at a low level. Therefore, developing the technology of hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethanol is emergent. The first and foremost task is to develop a high efficient catalyst.Pt based catalyst is beneficial for hydrogenation reaction and has been widely used in many hydrogenation reactions. This paper studies the effect of promoter on Pt catalyst made by impregnation method and finds that the addition of Sn can lead Pt to be highly dsipersed, which is proved by XRD analysis. And by analyzing the effect of the support on the catalyst with NH3-TPD, it was found that the weak acid catalyst is favorable to high selectivity of ethanol. Analyzing the catalyst with XPS, Raman and in situ CO-DRIFTS, we found that it exits the electronics interaction between Pt and Sn. And then analyze the effect of the mass ratio of Sn and Pt, we found that the oxide of Sn played a vital role in this catalyst.Lastly, the reaction conditions were studied, which included temperature, pressure, ratio of H2/CH3COOH and LHSV. Based on the experiment results, we determined the optimality reaction condition:temperature260℃, pressure3.5MPa, mole ratio of H2/CH3COOH25, LHSVl.Oh-1. Under these recation conditions, the conversion of acetic acid is93%, the selectivitity of etanol is95%and the lifetime of catalyst is more than1100hours.
