The Smart Grid is a fully intelligent power supply network with each node being real-time monitored,which ensure the two-way information flowing between the generation side and the demand side. Due to the complexity of the demand side, the interactive mesh communication system has become a research focus of the Smart Grid. With the advantages of no need for wiring, convenient-construction, and easy maintenance, etc, wireless communication technologies have obvious superiority on the Smart Grid. As a new wireless communication technology, the ZigBee has developed rapidly in recent years.In this paper, a deep analysis and research has been done on the physical layer, MAC layer, network layer, application layer, the structure of security service and data transmission of ZigBee2007stack architecture. According to the structure model of demand side of Smart Grid communication system, the communication network is divided into lower network and upper network, and the coordinator acts as the gateway. The modular method is used on the design of the lower network equipment hardware, it is summarized as follows:(1)The MSP430F2618is used as the the MCU unit, the CC2520, CS5463are respectively aptted to ZigBee communication module and electric energy measurement module. The communication of the CC2520,CS5463and AT91RM9200used SPI bus.(2)The AT91RM9200is used as the the CPU unit, the CC2520, W5200were respectively chosen as the ZigBee communication module and ethernet communication module. The communication of the CC2520,W5200and AT91RM9200used SPI bus. Considering the convenience of dilatancy, memory circuit is designed.According to the model of "client/sever" of IEC62056protocol, data transmission and ZigBee networking are designed. Due to the mesh type network topology structure being selected, the power data is collected, storaged and transmited with high efficiency and stability. In this paper, the overall performance of the demand side of Smart Grid is tested with the completed Smart Meter and coordinator, and the results show that the ZigBee network is established successfully, the function of the electric energy data acquisition and remote intelligent meter is implemented, which meet the design requirements.
