Recent years, with the development of the TianJin BinHai New District, therequirement for amount of land have been increasing. Building of breakwaters has tobe bult as a protection from waves, sands and ice from out seas.Breakwater is an important part of the port constructures. It is built when theconditions of waters around the port can not qualify for the transporting requirements.Building of breakwaters can stop waves and keep a certain water depth so that it can bea shelter for devices in port, the mooring of ships, loading and unloading in ports andthe security of navigation. Also it plays a important role to the stability of soil andfoundations in port, especially to the reclaimed soil foundation in TianJin port which isreinforced by vacuum preloading method. This kind of reclaimed soil foundation hassome properties of soft clay. And breakwater’s stability can be affected greatly by thesurcharge load on the reclaimed soil foundation. In this thesis, the sliding of No.16breakwater in east of North port in TianJin Port is discussed. The effects of surchargeloading back of the breakwater to the sliding and the stability of the breakwater is to beanalysised. The content of the thesis covers the following aspects:1. For the practice example of the sliding of the breakwater in TianJin port, widelyused limit equilibrium method is conducted to analyze the stability of the foundation. Also the stabilities of the foundation under different surcharge load is calculated.2. Based on the theory of the distribution of the plastic zone caused by thesurcharge load on the soft clay foundation and the fact that soft soil in TianJin port hasthe plastic rheological properties when surcharge load hold for a long time, the affectsof the development of plastic zone to the soft soil foundation stability is also analyzed.3. Combined the results of the analysis made by the limit equilibrium method andthe affect of the plastic zone under surcharge load to the stability of breakwater, thecauses of the sliding practice is concluded, and the measures to low the possibilities ofsilding of breakwaters on the soft soil are provided.
