Pollution flashover of insulators may threaten the stable operation of power gridseriously. Therefore, many researchers all over the world have carried out a lot ofstudies on the natural pollution accumulation and mechanism of pollution flashover ofinsulators. At present, most of the research on the pollution accumulation rule ofinsulators were completed by natural pollution accumulation or simulation test. However, there are few reports about natural pollution accumulation of insulatorsapplied with these two ways. Hence, in this paper, a simulation test and a naturalpollution accumulation test were adopted to study the natural pollution accumulationrules of insulators, which had important theoretical significance and engineeringapplication value for the external insulation design and selection.Firstly, the software of FLUENT was adopted to study the characteristic of airflowdistribution and collision coefficient of particles of insulators. At the same time, anexperiment was carried out to study the natural pollution accumulation rules ofinsulators and a comparison was made between the experiment results and thesimulation results. At last, pollution flashover tests were did to study the pollutionflashover performance of natural polluted insulators and the factors that affect thepollution flashover performance of natural polluted insulators were analyzed. The mainconclusions obtained from the tests and calculations are:①In the simulation test, the characteristic of airflow distribution of differentinsulators are distinct under the same condition and the collision coefficient of particleswas influenced by wind velocity and particle diameter.②In the natural pollution deposition test, the pollution accumulation rule ofdifferent insulators with typical sheds are distinct under the same condition and it wasinfluenced by shed structure, rainfall, wind velocity, and so on.③The comparison of natural pollution accumulation test results with simulationdata shows their better consistency.④The flashover voltage of natural pollution test is higher than that of artificialpollution test, which may be caused by non-uniform pollution distribution on the topand bottom surfaces of insulators, pollution component and hydrophobic nature ofcomposite insulator.
