With more and more electric arc furnace putting into operation, the grid power quality issues are becoming prominent. In order to study the effects on power grid that caused by electric arc furnace, the grid power quality issues are improved by active power filter, based on the model of the electric arc furnace. The details are as follows:First, the electric arc furnace’s fluctuation model is established, on the basis of the existed electric arc furnace model, the random number module and the capacitance induction module. The model of nonlinear time-varying resistance is improved, the energy relationship that reflect changing radius is added into original model that reflect the relationship between resistance and time. The chaotic model is improved, its arc radius is modulated on the basis of Chua’s chaotic system. Each model is merged together, forming a new comprehensive model. At the same time, each electric arc furnace model is simulated and tested.Next, the basic principle of active power filter is analyzed, the models of pq and ipiq active power filter are set up and simulated respectively on the basis of instantaneous reactive power, then their compensation effect is compared and analyzed, their result of management is observed when voltage waveform distortion and Three-phase unbalanced load take place. The fault detection scheme of active power filter is put forward, its faults are judged by the change of total harmonic distortion.Last, the cause of applying active power filter to the power quality issues caused by electric arc furnace is analyzed. The load calculation of some actual steel mills is done. According to the results of load calculation, a simulation model of the actual steel mills is build. The active power filter and its fault detection scheme are used in this simulation system, the results of simulation are analyzed. All these play a positive role to improve the power quality of electric arc furnace.
