With the development of science and technology, the load of the application in the electricpower system has changed greatly, which brought serious power quality problems.Electronic energy quality is related to overall benefit of the entire national economy directly.Therefore, the improvement of the quality of power has become one of the contemporaryproblems that need to be solved. And the management of harmonic and reactive powercompensation has been regarded as the main target to improve the power quality. Active powerfilter (APF) and static var compensator (SVC) can be used as typical representative of harmoniccontrol and reactive power compensation, and they have irreplaceable characteristics. Thecombination of APF and SVC can restrain harmonic and improve the power factor, which makeup for the shortcomings of each other, and reduce the cost, that improve the power qualityeffective.First, some concepts about the harmonic and reactive power are introduced, researchsituation and the background of the presented comprehensive compensation.And then it introduces the static var compensator (SVC) principle, connection mode, andbuilds the corresponding MATLAB simulation diagram; SVC control method of three phaseunbalanced system is mainly described. The power system of three phase unbalanced systembrings the serious harms, and SVC can improve the three phase unbalanced the power factor ofsystem. There are lots of methods for SVC compensation load, the symmetrical componentmethod and instantaneous reactive power theory two methods are described in detail, and Ibuilds the MATLAB simulation diagram to verify its effectiveness for each method.Finally, the simulation diagram for the APF and SVC comprehensive compensation schemeis built, to verify the effectiveness of the comprehensive compensation of proposed scheme. Andthis paper gets the conclusion that SVC more can effectively improve the power factor of systemof based on instantaneous reactive power theory.
