A number of high-rise tower structures are built. Under the long-term effects of environmental loads, tower structures prone to lots kinds of damage, mainly includeing bolt looseness at flange joints of vertical members, weld crack damage for junction plate and instability damage for vertical main members. Identification methods of damage location are proposed for instability damage. From another point, experimental verification makes the most sense for the theoretical approach.A model of high-rise tower structures is built for the damage identification research using finite element analysis software ANSYS. The instability damage reflected by the reduction of axial stiffness based on our long-term research work. Consequently, damage equivalent model and undamage model of a high-rise latticed tower structure are established for the further research.Based on the theoretical analysis suggested by the earlier discussion, the simulation analysis for the instability damage of vertical main member is carried out. Firstly, the sub-regions that the main member damage may occur is identificated by using the first band of wavelet packet energy curvature change rate index. Secondly, the specific damage location identification for instable members that may occured in the possible damage sub-regions is achieved based on the theory of modal strain energy and interval estimation. The simulation analysis indicates that the two steps diagnosis method is feasible. Finally, Experimental study is carried out to verify the damage location identification methods for the damage put forward above. An experiment model is designed and produced based on the simulation analysis. The experimental results shows that the damage diagnosis method is effective.
