The strong smart grid construction has become an essential issue for power grid corporations, power equipment manufacturers, research institutes and universities. Through the survey and research, the writer found that there exist many problems in communication network in power grid, like lacking scientific uniform planning and construction, communication technologies coexisting together, and main communication technologies lagging behind and failing to meet the growth of smart grid. Focusing on these issues, the performance of current power distribution communication network technologies and the operation demands of medium and low voltage distribution were studied in depth in this thesis. The function and performance of McWiLL broadband wireless access system were discussed, and the application of McWill system in smart grid, especially in medium and low voltage distribution was thoroughly researched. Meanwhile, for solving these problems and meeting the operation demands in medium and low distribution, the advanced McWiLL system was adopted to design and plan the current power grid communication network. The corresponding network structure and equipment selection were given. Furthermore by practical projects construction, the theoretical and technological results were tested. The practical effects showed that McWiLL system satisfied the requirements of medium and low voltage power distribution grid in the aspects of distribution and transformation monitoring, load management, remote meter reading and other operation requirements. McWiLL system promoted the information construction and the levels of modernization and intelligent of power grid. Moreover McWiLL system is a promising technology in the perspective of large scale application and complies with the wireless development of China’s power grid.
