The free piston energy converter (FPEC) is a new engine which combines two-stroke internal combustion engine with linear generator engine. It is the development trend of the future hybrid car engine and has a very good development and application prospect. Free piston engine’s simply structure, with no mechanical linkage, greatly reduces the mechanical losses and improves the utilization of the fuel. Besides, it has lots of advantages such as low emissions, good reliability, and can be applied to a variety of fuels. In this paper, dynamic process of the piston movement has been divided into eight stages. Each stage has a detailed mathematical modeling, with which build a piston motion model in MATLAB environment. According to the free-piston energy converter system, the author accomplishes the design of neuron PID controller and ADHDP (Action dependent heuristic dynamic programming) controller based on BP network. These two control algorithms are adaptive to the external environment and have self-learning ability. They are suitable for complex nonlinear systems. The simulation results show that the two controllers make the free-piston energy converter operate lastingly and stably, having a good controlling effect.
