Sandstone-mudstone particle mixture is a common filling soil mixed by sandstoneand mudstone particle in certain proportion, which has the characteristics such as easyto be obtained in local materials and compacted. The compacted sandstone-mudstoneparticle mixture has the advantages of high strength and small deformation.The mixedsoil is often used in transportation, construction, water conservancy, watertransportation engineering construction. The effect factors of strength and deformationof the mixture is a lot, so selecting suitable sandstone and mudstone mixture parameterscan improve the stability of the slope and decrease the actual project cost. But at presentthe research about strength and deformation properties of the mixture is not much. Inthis paper, based on the experiment, the GDS triaxial testing system is used to study thestrength deformation characteristics of the mixture under saturated and unsaturatedconditions. Then further study focus on the grain breakage of the mixture under triaxialtexts. The mainly research content and results are as follows:(1) Through the triaxial and uniaxial tests of, the mechanical parameters anddeformation characteristics of the sandstone and mudstone under natural and saturatedstate are determined. And detailed triaxial test plans of sandstone-mudstone particlemixture are developed.(2) The strength and deformation characteristics of the mixture are studied underunsaturated and saturated state, respectively. Then based on the experimental results, therelationship between the strength and deformation characteristics and effect factors suchas dry density, moisture content, grain size distribution and the proportion of sandstoneand mudstone particles are analyzed.(3) Based on the test data, the influence of water on the strength and deformationcharacteristics of the mixture are studied under various influence factors. The resultsindicate that the strength and deformation parameters of the mixture which undersaturated condition is basically less than its value under unsaturated condition.(4) Based on the method of measuring particle breakage which proposed by Hardin,the influence of wetting effect of water on grain breakage is studied. Then throughanalyzing the relationship between grain breakage and the various influence factors, themechanism of grain breakage of sandstone-mudstone particle mixture is discussed.
