With the rapid growth of economy and urbanization of G city in recent years and therising of civil living standards, automobile ownership has been increasing, which results inthe overloaded ground traffic. People come to realize that the rapid development of urban railtransit is of great importance to ease the congestion, utilize land and space resources in areasonable way, and to improve the integration of transportation infrastructure. In the coming5years, G city is going to enter the peak in a new round of urban rail transitconstruction.Years of evolvement in the global rail transit technology leads to abundantsystem modes, while various vehicles of each system mode are more than you can think of. Itis a challenge for decision-makers to select the type of vehicle appropriate to urbandevelopment and plan for wire network development. This paper attempts to make asystematic analysis of urban rail transit vehicle selection, centering on the vehicle selectionfor line Z in G city.In the introduction, a simplified two-phase vehicle selection reasearch idea is proposed, which is “figuring out system mode before evaluate the corresponding vehicle types”.According to the idea, this paper firstly introduces the overall plan for rail transit in G city andanalyzes the planning for line Z. And then, based on the existing research results, internal andinternational experiences, it summarizes five categories of system modes and their applicableconditions, which are metro, light rail, low capacity rail transit, suburban railway, regionalexpress respectively. After that, this paper proposes a recommended system mode for line Z.Based on the recommended system mode for line Z and the metro vehicles applied in Gcity, the metro mode is classified into type A vehicle, type B vehicle and linear motorvehicle(type L vehicle). By combining the basic vehicle selection principle with thecomparison of the three types of vehicle in technical aspect, the analysis of theircharacteristics, as well as the performance evaluation of the lines in operation in G city,Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) and other research methods are used to construct thevehicle selection model. The model consists of a evaluation index system for vehicle typeselection, including4factors and25evaluation indexes. It is justified by line1in G citywhich is relatively mature. The model is then applied in the vehicle type selection for line Z,based on which a recommended vehicle type and its marshalling form for line Z is proposed. In conclusion, this paper constructs a vehicle type selection model and evaluation systemfor urban rail transit, which provides a scientific way to make decision for complex andever-changing vehicle selection. It can streamline the rail transit operation system mode and system configuration and lay a solid fundation for the subsequent line construction design andproject construction.
