Strong earthquakes usually cause considerable economic losses and casualties, and trigger devastating disasters to the human society and families. Performance-based seismic designing requires the structural engineer to reduce the earthquake-induced damage to its minimum by reasonable designing, and to predict the seismiclosses encountered in a possible future earthquake. Generally, this earthquake-induced damage consists of two parts: the economic losses and the casualties. Up tonow, a series of achievements have been obtained in the economic losses, butresearches in the field of casualties relatively lag behind. Meanwhile, there is a lackof a refined study in the internal injuries, and far less of research is in the human-evacuation behaviors upon the occurrence of an earthquake. In this paper, a methodaimed at monomer structures is established to evaluate the human injuries as well asto simulate the human-evacuation behaviors. In addition, a new approach forassessing the earthquake-induced global economic losses is proposed. The maincontents of this paper are as follows:1. This paper provides a result of probability seis mic risk analysis of thestructure. The collapse process of a steel frame structure is investigated by thenon-linear dynamic time-history analys is. Based on the seismic demand andcapacity analyses, the structural vulnerability curves are established. The annualmean exceeding probability of an engineering demand parameter of interest, as wellas the annual rate of structure collapse, is given based on the site-specific seismichazard analysis.2. In the process of seismic casualties assessment, this paper takes into accountthe personnel evacuation behavior. The influence of the parameters of the cellularautomata model and geometrical parameters of the build ing on the evacuationprocess is analyzed. A more precise evaluation of the number, distribution of thecasualties as well as the survivals is given.3. The direct and indirect economic losses under different earthquake intensitylevels are analyzed. The casualties in terms of economic losses are derived byconsidering the individual life values. The evaluation results for the total economiclosses and the corresponding seismic risk analysis under different seismic intensitylevels are presented by uniformly integrating the structural damages and humancasualties as the monetary unit.
