Pulsed power technology has been used widely in the fields of scientific experimentsand industrial application. Switch is the key component in the pulsed power system. Due tothe advantages of fast responsiveness, low energy loss, simple structure and low jitter, gasswitch has been applied in many place of the pulsed power technology. However, the shortlife-time of the gas swich is unconvenient for the equipment maintenance. Thus, in thisthesis the way to improve the life-time of the gas switch is fully explored.This thesis firstly focus on the overview of different types of high power pulse closingswitches including the operating principles, characteristics and parameters. Based on theprinciple of gas discharging, the dynamic characteristic of gas switch is fully researched.Focus on the life-time of the gas switch, this thesis analysis the main reason for theelectrode erosion and insulator failure and propose the ways to improve the performance ofthe gas switch: choosing the high melting point material to be gas switch electrode,optimizing the geometrical shape of electrode to improve the electrical field distribution,designing a baffle to keep the insulator from contamination.According to these methods dicussed in the thesis, a pre-ionization field distrotion gasswitch is developed. The result of experiment prove that the static and dynamiccharacteristic is reliable and stable, life-time of the gas switch is largely improved.Compared with the general field distrotion gas switch, the pre-ionization field distrotiongas swith has much higher reliability and less jitter.
