The problem of traffic congestion is an important direction of which the scholarshave studied. With the development of economy and the increase in population, the size ofthe city is bigger and the urban road network is also continually expanding. Traffic jamsphenomenon has always existed. These bring people travel inconvenient and affect therapid development of urban economy. The urban road network is a typical complicatednetwork. There has been a lot of research which combines the theory of complex networksand the actual situations to analyze the urban road network. The work provides certaintheoretical basis for the plan of urban road network.Traffic flow directionality and network weight asymmetry are widespread notions intraffic networks. The network heterogeneity, which could not be an ignored factor, has thecorrelation with network structure. The current research about heterogeneity consideredthe node degree. It is essential to take link weight into consideration. This paper firstanalyzes the characteristics of the traffic network, and then study the theory relatedcomplex network. The generative mechanism of several complex network models isdescribed and the comparative analyses of topological characteristics of the severalcomplex network models are done through experiments. And then this paper describesbuilding process of the traffic flow model and summarizes the heterogeneity research oncomplex network, and the definition of network heterogeneity is proposed based on thelink directionality and the difference of the link weight. At the same time the heterogeneityanalysis of classical network model is also done. Finally, we do the numerical simulationand analyze the network heterogeneity influence to traffic congestion for the trafficnetwork respectively with different network topology, different edge capacity and differentaverage degree of node of the network. The numerical results demonstrate that the network heterogeneity decreases with thesize of the network. The critical value of the heterogeneity determines the congestionphase transition process. The congestion degree increases with heterogeneity when thenetwork heterogeneity is at subcritical region. A network is more tolerant of congestion ifthe heterogeneity of the network is smaller or larger than the critical value. Furthermore, when heterogeneity reaches the critical value, the average number of accumulated vehiclesarrives at the maximum and the traffic flow is under a serious congestion state. Therefore,a significance of improvement on the tolerance to congestion of traffic networks can bemade if the network heterogeneity is controlled within a reasonable range.
