Various types of high embankment are inevitable during the construction of high-gradehighways in the mountains. Due to the self gravity of soil and repeated loads of vehicle,the roadbed will overall and partially sink. Then, this affects the normal operation of thetransportation system and threats to the safety of people’s lives and property. The filling ofthe high embankment with geogrid can improve the stability of the embankment, but theeffectiveness of reduce high embankment settlement and the characteristicsis of geogridcohesive soil-mesoscopic role are not fully understood. Thus, research is very importantfor the theoretical value and practical significance.To study the mechanism of action of the reinforcement and cohesive soils, PFC2D(Particle Flow Code in Two Dimensions) was used to simulate the pullout tests of thecohesive soil in the study. The particle displacement and the change law of sampleporosity are mainly discussed in the different normal stress. The results show that thenormal stress is greater, the shear strength of reinforced soil is greater. The cohesion of thereinforced soil18.8kPa is larger than the actual soil’s cohesion16.8kPa. The internalfriction angle is varied from13.9to6. The strength characteristic of the soil ischanged.In addition, it can be simulated the process of layered filling of the high embankmentwith and without geogrid by using finite difference method of FLAC3D. In case of plaidgeogrid or not, it was showed that the laied geogrid has certain ability to control soilsettlement and lateral displacement from the high embankment. The reduction ofhorizontal displacement is8.74%, and the reduction of settlement is3.82%. The horizontaldisplacement and settlement of the reinforced soil under traffic loads is reduced by15.18%and17.32%, which is significantly larger than its own weight field amplitude.Finally, comparing with the simulation results and in-site monitoring datas from the paragraph K48+360-K48+420of the highway of Yunfu to Luoding highway inGuangdong province, the deviationof the settlement and horizontal displacement is11%and4%respectively, which represents the good rationality of the simulation model. And itis remarkable that reinforcement techenology of high filling embankment can effectivelyprevent uneven settlement and inhibition of the lateral displacement of the slope.
