The thesis mainly talks about brick’s pattern language, which includes threedimensions with decisive impact on brick buildings. The first dimension is the shape, color and texture of a brick. The feature of eachbrick is the fundamental factor of a whole brick wall. The shape of a brick determinesthe division of a wall, and color gives a brick wall ‘character’, while texture endowsthem ‘emotion’.The second dimension is the part between tow bricks—joint masonry, which isoften neglected in the phase of design. However, the thickness, color and place of jointmasonry would definitely affect the presence of brick wall. The last dimension is how bricks combined, in another word, brick masonry, whichplays significant role in brick’s pattern language. Along with the function of brick walldecreased, brick masonry becomes more and more creative and has tremendousexpression in graphics. This part uses two kinds of method to analyze brick masonry.First, I study the factors that influence the presence of brick and its shadow effect.Second, I classify each brick masonry according to their different features.Through the process of learning and researching, the aim of the thesis is to learnfrom brick, and to be inspired by how creative work brick can make. Instead ofacquiring a definite answer, the thesis would break the old paradigm of brickarchitecture by focusing on the newest brick masonry, and would also broaden thecognition for what the bricks can form, then, provide reference to Chinese contemporaryarchitectural practice.
