A Study On The Design Of Characteristic Top Level Space

Large amount of tall buildings are consisted of typical floor. The top levelspace has an extra top face than the typical floor so that it has more opportunityto have communication with outdoor space to create better space. This articlehas a research on the characteristic top level space of the guest rooms on the rooftopof the first guest house of the general staff headquarters, focusing on related issuesabout the design with designated function in the practical program.The research is developed in the order of the design process of the characteristictop level space, studying from scheme design to the technical problem.In the design research part, I have collected88architecture cases withcharacteristic top level space, forming a case library and providing basis and materialsfor the study of the design method. By section space analysis of the typical cases inclose relation to the characteristic guest rooms in the practical program, I havesummarized the design method of3types characteristic top level space. Using themethod summarized my research has a study to the design of the presidential suite andexecutive suite, discussing on the possibilities of design. The design research isfollowed by the analysis of the potential technical problem about the design.The technical problems of the top level space design are consisted of two mainparts: roof construction and the transition with the level below the top level space. Thefirst problem is similar to the problem of the single story building. The second one is thecharacteristic problem of the top level space. This research focuses on the secondproblem especially the roof for foot traffic and green roof which have close relation tothe design. The construction thickness has great influence on the design of the structuralslab of the floor of the roof level space, which is deep studied in the research.My research has two main conclusions:①The design of top level space shouldconsider the general form of the building. The top level space can create characteristicspace by organizing different architectural elements, using the potentiality of the topface and establishing space connection with the lower space.②The solution to thetechnical problem of the design with the roof level space should have overallconsideration of structure, tube well, construction etc. The resolution to the constructionthickness of the roof for foot traffic and green roof should have general consideration ofgreening effect and the lower space condition.
