International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to establish the Goal BasedStandards (GBS) to ensure the high safety of ships as the most important strategy project. AsCommon Structure Rules (CSR) can not satisfy the requirements of GBS, InternationalAssociation of Classification Societies (IACS) decided to establish Harmonious CommonStructural Rules (HCSR) for bulk carriers and double-hull oil tankers. So it is important to dosome research on HCSR, especially the comparison with CSR. The main contents aredescribed as below:1. The yield strength analysis method of HCSR was studied, including the structuralmodeling, reduction of corrosion thickness, boundary conditions, load cases, and how toadjust hull girder shear forces, bending moments and torsional moments. The difference ofyield strength analysis method among HCSR, CSR-BC and CSR-OT was summarized.2. The technology background of bulkling strength analysis method was studied. Thebuckling requirements for direct strength analysis and buckling capacity were analyzed. Thedifference of buckling strength analysis method among HCSR, CSR-BC and CSR-OT wassummed up.3. The fatigue strength analysis method of HCSR was studied, including fatigue loadsand load cases, stress range calculation and composition, S-N curve selection, fatigue damage, fatigue life calculation for nominal stress method and hot spot stress method. The differenceof fatigue strength analysis method among HCSR, CSR-BC and CSR-OT was expounded.4. The yield, buckling and fatigue strength analysis for a bulk carrier and an oil tankerare carried out based on HCSR and CSR. The difference of calculation results between HCSRand CSR is shown and compared. Some advice to the revision of HCSR is also put forward.
