Geosynthetic materials as a new type of civil engineering materials, has been widelyused in highway engineering construction. Reinforced sand cushion is one applications of thegeosynthetic materials,by laying a certain thickness of sand cushion on the foundation surfaceand spreading one or several layers of geogrid in the sand cushion. It is mainly used in softsoil embankment reinforcement of highway. At present, drainage consolidation method andcomposite foundation method is the most commonly used method in the highway soft soilsubgrade reinforcement, and the reinforced sand cushion can play a bigger role in the twomethods. From the macroscopic analysis, reinforced sand cushion layer under the twodifferent ways of subgrade reinforcement should bear different additional stress levels. Thereinforcement mechanism and calculation methods should also differ. Previous studies aremore focus on upper part of the composite foundation reinforced sand or gravel cushion.First, the article introduces the load of highway geogrid and the classification ofgeosynthetic materials, summarizes the destroy of reinforced embankment and calculationtheory. In the end, based on a field filling test which focuses on lower level of additional stressand some application experience of reinforced sand cushion, filling test is divided into:natural filling, one layer of reinforced sand cushion filling, two layers of reinforced sandcushion combined with drainage plate processing filling. Tests the data of settlement plate, side pile, the displacement pile and flexible sensor.By the analysis of test data, summarizessome engineering experience and provides a reference for subsequent similar projects.
