As one of the new technologies in surface modification and rapid prototyping,laser cladding has lots of advantages including high efficiency, low cost, smallheat-affected zone and pollution-free. Laser cladding technology has been widelyapplied in industry, such as mould manufacture, laser direct manufacturing andbiomedical manufacturing. However, the quality of cladding layer and the surface defectslaser cladding are the development of the laser cladding technology barriers. It is well knownthat laser cladding surface quality directly decides the performance and service life of thecladding layer, it has very important significance of surface properties and defects to control thewidth and height of cladding layer.The semiconductor laser was used to prepare iron-based alloy powder Fe55coating onthe surface of nodular cast iron QT600-3. The reasons for the formation of cracks,porosities, cladding malformation, cladding oxidation and cladding invalid etc in lasercladding layer were investigated, in order to reduce corresponding defects, manycorresponding measures and methods is proposed. The width and height of the cladding layerunder different process parameters is measured by vernier caliper. Different process parameterson the cladding layer of the influence of the macro (Width and Height) were investigated. Theresults show that:1. Laser power, scanning speed, powder feeding speed, defocusing amount etcprocess parameters has lager effects to the macro and quality of the cladding layer.With the increase of laser power, the cladding layer width increase amplitude is small,while the thickness of the cladding layer increased amplitude. In accord with thesituation powder feed rate and laser power consistent case, the thickness of thecladding layer decreases obviously with the increase of laser scanning speed; Within thescope of the effective spot diameter, from coke have less effect on the size of cladding layer.2. In order to explore the role of interaction of different factors, the experimental dataare for orthogonal variance calculation. Experiment results show that laser power andpowder conveyer rotation speed affect that the width of the cladding layer extremelylarge. Power feeding rate and scanning speed is the main factors affecting the heightof the laser cladding layer. In laser power, scanning speed, powder feeding speed,defocusing amountinteraction, optimum process parameters are selected. When thelaser power is2400W, voltage of powder feeding is40V, defocus amount is12mm, canning speed is150mm/min cladding layer narrow heat affected zones, the claddinglayer body achieve a good metallurgical bond, there is no macro and microdefects.
