As an important part of the intelligent transportation field, VANET is also one of the most promising research directions. Currently, the two main areas on VANET concentrate in the access method of physical layer and routing protocol in network layer. Among them, the most mature routing protocols are proposed for the mobile Ad hoc network, and cannot be fully applicable to the VANET. Therefore, developing new routing protocols for VANET gradually become a popular direction. In the paper, taking VANET routing protocols as the main object of our study, we propose the VANET geographic routing protocol RGRP (Rival Geographic Routing Protocol) based on the competition mechanism in view of the characteristics different from mobile Ad hoc network.Comparing the existing VANET routing protocols, we find data packet forwarding strategies can be developed considering the mobility or location. However, both methods are bound to produce one-sidedness. Therefore, the proposed routing protocol RGRP takes two factors in consideration at the same time, including node mobility and location. Therefore, we determine the location of the current node by computing the difference between the neighbor node density and the directional divergence. Furthermore, RGRP distributes two different weight values to the different packet forwarding through the position of nodes to achieve a competitive mechanism. The author proposes a regional greedy forwarding mode in the node location-based packet forwarding strategy, so as to solve the local optimum dilemma caused by the greedy forwarding, avoiding the process of building plans to describe the network topology by using perimeter forwarding and reducing the complexity of the protocol operation greatly. Finally, we build the low load urban scene, high load urban scenes and different rates scene with the network simulation platform OPNET to validate the performance of RGRP in VANET. The results show that RGRP greatly improves in data packet arrival rate, routing overhead and delay, compared with other aspects routing protocols...
