Arthroscope is a kind of optical device which can observe the internal structure of our joint, as an endoscope it is used to make a diagnosis and give treatment to the joint. GRIN(gradient refractive index lens) has many merits such as light weight, small volume, good image quality, according this a simple structure of optical system for1/6" CCD arthroscope is designed with Zemax in this paper. The system has60°field of view and F number is6. The value of modulation transfer function (MTF) is more than0.2in100lp/mm, the resolution of the system is up to0.01mm, the spot diagrams of all configurations are smaller than Airy disk. The total track is204mm, the biggest caliber is less than4.6mm, according to the characteristics of arthroscope, the system meets the requirement. This paper firstly makes an overall introduction of arthroscope, and then analyzes the gradient refractive index optics. Focuses on the optical design of the gradient refractive index lens. This design uses one GRIN lens which can replace three retrofocus objective lens in the traditional arthroscope, and gives an image quality evaluation. At the last, give a certain consideration about the limitations of the GRIN.
