With the development of mobile robot technology, means of transport step into the homes of ordinary people. There are many problems of traditional wheelchairs, such as large turning radius, danger in stepping up and down. An omni-direciton electric wheelchair with a greater flexibility overcomes the inherent defects by an omni-direction Mecanum wheel. Due to the inherent characteristics of its wheels, the wheelchair not only fit in narrow spaces such as indoor building and household environment, but also fit for the open road. Mecanum electric wheelchairs is reliable and of broad application prospect, meanwhile, it will provide convenience to the elderly and the disabled. The design and development work related to the above points for this article are carried out:(1) Illustrate the background and significance of the omni-direction electric wheelchairs, and introduce the research states of electric wheelchair production. Describe and compare the characteristics of different wheels and drive modes, and then propose research objectives and contents of this paper.(2) Describe and compare the characteristics of the omni-direction wheels, including Mecanum further analysis features. An effective arrangement and mechanical analysis of different motion are made, while the motion operation of the whole vehicle is studied.(3) Interpret the mechanical design. Analysis the components connected to the base frame and the independence of each rear wheel, and give machine design of the base frame. Analysis is focused on the principle of getting off device, the selection of the linear actuator motor, the damping device design, the wheelchair seat design, and the appearance design of the whole wheelchair.(4) Analysis and elaborate the electrical system, including the realization of the electrical isolation system diagram, the handle control module design and manufacture, the motor drive module design and manufacture, and the selection of the main control chip and motor. The software of the electric wheelchair is analyzed and developed in the MPLAB IDE integrated development environment.
