With the the acceleration of urbanization process, many cities are facing the main problems ofwater resources shortage and water pollution which limit the sustainable development. Rainwaterresources are one of the most important links of the natural water cycle system and alsofundamental strategic resources and natural resources.The proportion of residential areas in thecity is high and much water resources are wasted in the residential landscape construction.How tocombine rainwater utilization with landscape construction and relieve the contradiction betweenwater supply shortage and rising landscape water demand is one of the primary purposes of thispaper.Prominent achievements of rainwater utilization landscape had been made and correlativestudies of residential district were reported abroad. The researth about reainwater utilizationlandscape in China is still in the primary stage, and correlative studies of residential district wereexploratory and experimental.The paper analyses relevant concepts and theories of rainwaterutilization landscape design and the relationship between rainwater utilization and landscapeconstruction, combined with the research progress both at home and abroad,and then puts forwardthe present situation and defects of residential area rainwater utilization.Through the successful case studies of rainwater utilization landscape design at home andabroad,successful experience and reference value can be learned for Zhengzhou residentialdistricts rainwater utilization landscape design.Then the paper studied the rainwater utilizationnecessity and feasibility of Zhengzhou city and its rainwater utilization potentialities whichpredicted the amount of available rainwater resources in2010and2020,providing backgroundsupport for residential districts rainwater utilization in Zhengzhou.Through field survey of12representative residential districts and interviews with somecitizens of Zhengzhou city, the data of roof,road(pattern and material of pavment),greenspace,landscape pool and the actuality of rainwater utilization was obtained and the presentsituation of Zhengzhou residential districts landscape construction was analyzed from theperspective of rainwater utilization.Overall, it’s still in the primary stage for Zhengzhou residentialdistricts landscape construction and there is no systematic rainwater utilization measures.Greenspace and waterscape facilities consume tap water excessively and the irrigation technique is stillrelatively out-dated.According to the above problems and the results of the survey, the principle of rainwaterutilization landscape construction of residential districts and influence factors were analysed. Thenthe paper put forwoard the suitable rainwater utilization mode for Zhengzhou residential districts and discussed ways of landscape construction under different site conditions(roof,road,greenspace)and different stages of rainwater utilization (collection,storage,purification andpenetration)based on the natural and geographical features in Zhengzhou.In the end, based on themain problem and water balance analysis,the paper firstly put forward the content,process and thecorresponding safeguarding measures of rainwater utilization landscape construction and thendemonstrated the feasibility of residential districts rainwater utilization landscape constructionwhich had economic and ecological benefits by taking the example of Green cloud residentialdistrict.The paper is expected to be a reference to construct rainwater utilization landscape ofresidential districts based on the primary study, and make contributions to the residential districtsrainwater utilization landscape construction of central plains.
