Solar energy water heating system is one of the most significant development directions ofsolar energy development and utilization technology applications. With the support and promotionof the country, the application of solar energy water heating system has developed from smallhousehold water heater to large commercial water heating system, such as building energyefficiency, industrial production, agricultural production and so on. On the basis of relevantstandards, the running state and performance of solar energy water heating system should beevaluated according to the accurate and comprehensive statistic analysis of monitoring data.The main research aim of this article is to design a measurement and monitoring instrumentaccording to the requirements of energy measurement and monitoring for solar water heatingsystem and technical guidelines of renewable energy demonstration project data monitoring systems,in order to finishing the goals of energy measurement and monitoring for solar water heatingsystem.Firstly, the basic knowledge of solar energy water heating system, including its components,features, and operation mechanism and so on, is described in this paper. Secondly, based onrequirements of design, the design proposal of measurement and monitoring instrument is proposedand demonstrated. The application case of measurement and monitoring instrument in solar energywater heating system is presented.Then, the design of the hardware and software are detailedly introduced. The hardware isdesigned according to the principle of stability and reliability, which mainly contains two modules,one of which is the embedded system and the other is the peripheral circuit. The embedded systemmainly consists of ARM Cortex-M3series micro-controller STM32F103, and the peripheral circuitis mainly made up of signal detection module, data acquisition module, SD card storage module,RS485communication module and W5100Ethernet communication module.The software is designed according to the principle of user requirements scalability and theideas of top-down modular programming, composed of the main program, initialization software,data collection software, energy metering software, data storage software and data communicationsoftware.At last, some functional testing methods of the instrument are introduced. Additionally, thisinstrument has been put into actual apply for solar energy water heating system to make energymeasurement and data collection, and the result is analyzed in detail.The results of the operation show that the instrument has completed all the tasks and reached the design targets. What is more, it has some advantages that data collection is accurate and energymetering is correct and remote communication is stable. It could provide important technical meansto make an objective evaluation of running status and application benefit for solar water heatingsystem. And it has a great affect to promote engineering application of solar energy water heatingsystem and energy-saving emission reduction of society.
