Solar simulator is an important tool for studying solar power system, which can dramatically shorten the application of solar power systems research cycle, improving research efficiency and reliability of the results. It is an essential tool for major universities, research institutes and research factory production.Establish the mathematical model of solar cells is a prerequisite for solar simulator studies. This paper describes the working principle of solar cells, and then introduced the most common solar cell circuit equivalent model-engineering calculation model in current literature. The derivation and simulation software through the formula, pointing out some shortcomings of the model exist. Based on this mathematical model of a solar cell is proposed herein-based on the actual equivalent circuit of the theoretical model, the details of the calculation model is obtained by the formula in detail, and finally by means of the two models are MATLAB simulation software by compare their results prove the accuracy of the actual equivalent circuit theory model.Select the main circuit topology is an important guarantee for solar simulator to achieve. In this paper we choose the triple-phase step-down chopper circuit as the main structure. While introducing the zero voltage transition PWM circuit to achieving the soft switching process of the main switch. It is also play a role in reducing the power losing and the noise caused during the switching circuit.Control strategy is the core technology to achieving the simulator. In this paper it refers primarily to find and track the operating point of load. After a summary and comparison of several common control strategies, we choose a hybrid control strategy combine the look-up table and the mathematical model calculations methods. The model calculation based on the equivalent circuit model of the solar cell to ensure the accuracy of the output of the simulator. While the combination of the look-up table, not only can improve the control’s computing speed, but also can extend the scope of application of the simulator. The look-up table is applied in the circuit dark current so that the simulator can simultaneously simulate any conditions and any type of solar cells and their components, greatly reducing the workload of researchers.Finally, through the MATLAB software simulation and hardware experiments prove the feasibility of the simulator and also have good static and dynamic characteristics. The simulator can meet the requirements of solar cell research.
