Piers are the main supporting structures of the bridge, of which carrying capacity and durability directly affect the overall safety of the bridge structure. Even under the normal operating conditions, the piers are damaged at varying degrees by the natural environment, accidental impact, material aging and other factors. To ensure the safety of the bridge structure, it has important theoretical and practical significance to study the sensitivity of the damaging parameter and evaluate the soundness of the pier.Based on the summary on the basis of predecessors’research results, this paper takes the current applications of rigid frame piers as the research object and focus on the following aspects:Firstly, common diseases and common pier bridge inspection methods (including visual examination and material examination, static and dynamic load test, etc.) are summarized and classified. Applicable bridge damage identification theory and methods (including those based on frequency, mode shape, flexibility and sensitivity matrix of damage identification method) are summarized. On this basis, soundness evaluation method applied to the damaged pier are analysed in detail.Secondly, on the basis of the test result of a damaged pier, a numerical model of the damaged pier was created by means of large-scale general-purpose finite element software Midas/Civil.Then the sensitivity of damage parameter of the pier in common damage forms is systematically probed and the soundness evaluation method of the pier is anlysed.Thirdly, the influence of the pier pile foundation involved in the calculation on the pier stiffness is analysed briefly and the different categories of conservation, maintenance and reinforcement suggestions for the damaged piers are given.Lastly, the actual parameters and test results of the damaged pier are used to verify the correctness and validity of the method described here,thus the research conclusions are available for related design and construction reference.
