The specific surface area of soil (SSA) is crucial for the interaction of ions and water molecules with the soil particles. Therefore, many physical and chemical properties of soil are determined by its total specific surface area. Specific surface area can be obtained by two methods: measurement and estimation. The Ethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether methods (EGME) and Methylene blue methods (MB) were introduced in this paper, to measure the specific surface area of loess in lanzhou. The measurement of EGME is larger than MB. The experimental results show that the influence of various experimental parameters on the results Results for a number of different fine-grained soils are presented. A detailed recommended test procedure is given. The proposed method uses simple and inexpensive laboratory equipment, is relatively simple to perform, and allows for rapid determination of SSA. For estimation of specific surface area, Describes the physical model, empirical model in the multiple linear regression equation, the power function equation, liquid limit equation, as well as non-plastic model of five models to predict the specific surface area of loess. Physical model according to size of clay,silt,sand and particle shape to predict the specific surface area; Multiple linear regression equation and power function equation is calculated according to the geometric mean (dg) and the standard deviation (sg) of the diameterof soil particles to predict; obtained liquid limit of Liquid limit equation is also very convenient, By the analysis of the limit moisture content; The nonplastic soils model were predicted by the average particle size of sand. Analysis results can be seen in the five kinds of prediction model, the comprehensive estimation effect by the physical model for the forecast of specific surface area of the loess is best. fitting linear relationship for the estimation of three empirical model and measurement, the linear correlation coefficient is low and the accuracy of estimation of is not high. The nonplastic soils model does not apply to the estimation of specific surface area of loess. the error between the estimation of specific surface area and the measurement is very great.
