This research object was focused on the national important commercial shellfish-Meretrix meretrix. Methods in experimental ecology, morphological analysis andmacrobenthic ecology were used to develop physical tagging methods on M. meretrix. The intertidal macrobenthic community Structural Features of the habitat of M.meretrix in Dongying were analyzed, and the relationship among the morphologicalcharacteristics of M. meretrix were discussed. This research also evaluated thefeasibility of the laser and the electric engraving tagging methods applied to thelarge-scale reseeding activities of M. meretrix. These results could provide theoreticalbasis and the reference for the stock enhancement of M. meretrix in China. The mainresults were listed as follows:1. This paper reviews recent literatures on tag and marking techniques of shellfishincluding physical tags and marks, biological marks, chemical marks, geneticmarks and internal tags. The applicable species and situations of these taggingmethods are discussed as well as their effects.2. The relationship of the morphological characteristics of M. meretrix werediscussed by measuring the M. meretrix which were captured by three times fromApril to June of2012at Dongying. The average shell length, shell width, shellheight, and weight of M. meretrix were40.10mm,20.38mm,33.53mm and18.55g.3. Based on the data collected from9sampling stations in two seasons from springto autumn in2011,29species were found and analyzed. They were classified into4classes, including13species of Molluse,11species of Crustacea,3species ofPolychaeta,2species of fish. The dominant species in spring were Bullacta exarata, Meretrix meretrix, Moerella iridescens, Dosinorbis japonica, Trochusvesriarium, Potamocorbula ustulata and Philyra pisum. The dominant specie inautumn was Mactra veneriformis. The results of CLUSTER and MDS analysisshowed that the structure of the macrobenthic communities in the9stationsbetween the two seasons was not very unified.4. This evaluated the feasibility of the laser tagging and the electric engravingtagging methods applied to the large-scale stock enhancement activities of M.meretrix. This chapter studied the growth, survival and tag retention of M.meretrix reared at two different tagging methods, namely, the laser tags and theelectric engraving tags. Results of the ONE-WAY ANOVA showed that both ofthe laser tags and electric engraving tags had no significant impact on the survivaland growth of M. meretrix. In the60d aquaculture experiments in laboratory, bothof the laser tags and electric engraving tags were clear enough to recognize. Theretention rate of the laser tags and electric engraving tags were both100%. Thecumulative mortality rate of laser tagging method and electric engraving methodwas15+/-1.3%and12+/-1.3%, for the control group, the cumulative mortality ratewas13.33+/-3.1%. Both the tagging methods above could be used for thelarge-scale stock enhancement activities of M. meretrix.
