The measurement results of the log volume are directly related to the utilization rate of the log. it is a key link in the process of log processing. A long time, the original wood measurements are artificial seized feet. This method is vulnerable to the attitude, work experience and other subjective factors of the check-foot staff, it is cost and the accuracy and efficiency is relatively low. Therefore, the check-foot logs digitization method based on binocular vision system is put forward in this paper.Computer vision is an emerging technology, and the measurement techniques based on computer vision as the digitized advanced non-contact measurement technology with high precision, high efficiency and low cost, it has broad application prospects. The binocular vision system of the subject measured logs volume modeled on the human eyes. The entire measurement system consists of color image pre-processing, the camera parameters calibration, feature extraction, feature matching, and the calculation of log volume.Based on the analysis of several common image pre-processing methods, this paper put forward an image segmentation strategy on HSV color model which segments the input measured object, and also used a new camera parameter calibration method to not only calibrate the focal length of the camera, but also determine the best baseline distance between the left and right camera of the system. The paper focused on the basis of popular image extraction and matching technology, created a feature descriptor that has color measurement invariance and photometric invariant combined with the SIFT algorithm which has better robustness and the color information of images, and it also used fast search algorithm applicable to the descriptor for the identification of critical points to improve the stability, accuracy and calculation speed of the feature extraction and matching. Finally, the paper detected and calculated the cross-sectional area, horizontal axis, and volume data of the logs based on the principle of binocular vision.Do simulation experiments by MATLAB, and the experiments show that the logs digitized check-foot method based on computer vision can meet the non-contact measurement of logs seized feet for the actual demand, and it laid the foundation for further research of logs non-contact automatic measurement.
