As one of the key components of the beet harvester, the beet cut top mechanism plays a rolein the first step of the production process. The quality of the beet cut top has an important impacton the economic interests of the sugar industry. The thickness of sugar beet can’t be adjusted bythe beet cut top mechanism which is used in the current beet harvester. The sort of themechanism makes the bigger beet less cut, and the smaller beet more cut. This situation leads toserious economic losses, A novel beet cut top mechanism, named the adjustable cutting thicknessof beet cut top mechanism, has been proposed in this paper. Lots of work for mechanism analysiswas done. Then the kinematic model of this new–type mechanism has been established, and theoptimization and simulation analysis have been done. This research will contribute to atheoretical foundation for the research and development of domestic beet cut top mechanism.The main contents are included in this paper. They are shown as bellow:1) The theory of the adjustable cutting thickness of beet cut top mechanism and theKinematic characteristics were analyzed in this paper. Then the kinematic model of thisnew–type mechanism has been established and the beet top modeled by the Beet–kind.2) A novel mechanism of cutter control was invented, and the mechanism can reduce cuttingresistance in the process of the harvest. The kinematic model and equation has been built afterthe analysis of mechanism.3) According to the agronomic requirements and the standard of mechanism design, theobjective function of the beet cut top mechanism parameter optimization has been obtained inthis paper. A design kinematic simulation software of the adjustable cutting thickness of beet cuttop mechanism has been compiled based on VB. Using this software, the kinematiccharacteristics of the beet cut top mechanism has been analyzed. By parameter optimization ofthe kinematic simulation software, a set of parameters which meet the agronomic andmechanism design requirements have been obtained: H=570mm,k=2.4,Rf=180mm,Rc=100mm,L1=520mm. 4) The influence of various parameters on the cutting thickness has been analyzed in thispaper. With the software Matlab, Profiling wheel speed v and the beet cut top institutions tractionspeed v1has been optimized based on Genetic Algorithms. The optimized result of the ratiobetween them isv/v11.46.5) According the optimized results of the mechanism various parameters, various parts ofthe three–dimensional solid models have been built by the software of UG. Then with the samesoftware, various parts have been virtually assembled into a whole. The virtual model of theadjustable cutting thickness of the beet cut top mechanism has been founded with the softwareADAMS. The simulation of the beet cut top has been conducted based on the software ADAMS.In comparison with the theoretical cutting thickness curve, the result of the simulation is almostthe same. The correctness of the kinematical model and the analysis of the theory have beenproved.
