Migration is a means used by insects to avoid adverse environmental conditions and open new environment, and is also one of the main causes of plague of insects. The application of radar in monitoring insect migration provides a good research method to understand the laws of insect migration, and plays an extremely important role in agricultural pest warning and ensuring crops security. Vertical looking radar can provide more target information and is easy to realize automatic monitoring for a long time. This paper mainly discusses the simulation of shape characteristics of targets by analyzing the changes of their radar cross section when the radar antenna is zenith-pointing and the method of detection of weak target signal in radar echoes. At first, this paper introduces the significance of using radar in monitoring insect migration and discusses the origin, development and the status quo of vertical looking radar. The second chapter presents the basic structure and performance index of radar system, the double detection antenna structure, the near field and far field of antenna and the way how antenna works, and some knowledge related to electromagnetic scattering and polarization. The third chapter illustrates the change of target radar cross section with the change of target attitude angle and radar emission frequency. Then in order to simulate the real target, the radar cross sections of different shapes and sizes of simple targets in ideal situation are simulated and analyzed, such as sphere, ellipsoid, cylinder and rectangular plate, a lot of actual targets in nature can be equivalent to similar shapes or a combination of these. In chapter four, a kind of chaotic oscillators is applied in the detection of weak target signal in radar echo. A model has been designed based on the oscillator, and the principle and operation process of detection of target signal using the model are proposed. The simulation demonstrates the feasibility of this model. In the summary, the research contents of this project and the problem we meet are summarized and the future research focus is also proposed.
