Objective To analyze the radioactive iodine-131dose of treatment in pediatric patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism.Method Fifty one pediatric patients with hyperthyroidism and150adult patients with hyperthyroidism were retrospectively analyzed, who were contraindicat-ed or refractory for medical therapy and treated with iodine-131in this study. All pediatric and adult patients treated with iodine-131were divided into five groups according to the thyroid weight. Groupl:≤30g、Group2:31~50g、Group3:51~70g、Group4:71~90g and Group5:>90g. All pediatric patients who were either contraindicated or refractory to antithyroid drugs treatment and adult patients received radioactive iodine-131treatment with a dose of2.41±0.71,3.27±0.97MBq/per gram thyroid tissue, respectively. The total administrated doses of iodine-131in all pediatric and adult patients were224.36±130.10,354.88±308.04MBq, respectively. All the pediatric and adult patients treated with iodine-131were follow-up (median32months, range24to83months; median23months, range15to62months, respectively). The treatment results are divided into euthyroid, hyperthyroidism, late-onset hypothyroidism and relapsed. Results The results by follow-up found that16and65patients became euthyroid,22and56patients developed late-onset hypothyroidism,12and25patients still had hyperthyroidism,1and4patients relapsed after radioiodine therapy in pediatric group and adult group who were treated with iodine-131, respectively. The total efficiency was98%and97.3%, respectively. There were not statistical significance of treatment effect between pediatric and adult patients (x2=0.058,P>0.05). But there were statistical significance of received radioactive iodine-131treatment dose in per gram thyroid tissue(P<0.05).Conclusion When the radioactive iodine-131was administrated in pediatric patients with hyperthyroidism, who were contraindicated or refractory for medical therapy, it is recommended that each unit of the dose should be reduced than it was administrated in adults, the ratios that based on per gram thyroid tissue of adult patients were about71%~81%.
