ObjectiveTo evaluate the correlation of the quality of life with the score of the expanded disability status scale (EDSS), the age, and gender of the patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optica (NMO). And to observe if there is any difference of the life quality state between the MS and NMO patients, preliminarily exploring into the factors that influence health-related quality of life of patients with of MS and NMO.MethodsUsing the MSQOLl and EDSS score in22patients with MS and22patients with NMO and analyzing the correlation between MSQL1score with the EDSS score, age and gender.Results(1) In MS group, EDSS positively correlated with the MSQOL1(P<0.01, r>0). In the10domains of MSQOL1, EDSS positively correlated with the fatigue impact, mental health and health status. No obvious relationship between EDSS and pain, sexual satisfaction, bladder control, bowel control, visual impairment.else the self-reported cognitive dysfunction (perceived deficits and social support survey). The age of patient had no impact on the QOL (P>0.05). The gender made less difference on the QOL score (P>0.05). The patients who had higher EDSS score, the poorer quality of life he/she had.(2) In NMO group, EDSS score positively correlated with the MSQOL1(r=0.574, p<0.01). In the10domains of MSQOL1, EDSS positively correlated with the bowel control, fatigue impact and health status. No obvious relationship between EDSS and pain, sexual satisfaction, bladder control, mental health, visual impairment, self-reported cognitive dysfunction. The age of patient had no impact on the QOL (P>0.05). The gender made less difference on the QOL score (P>0.05). The patients who had higher EDSS score, the poorer quality of life he/she had. (3) The score of quality of life was not significantly difference between NMO and MS groups.ConclusionsEDSS score of MS and NMO both correlated with QOL. Clinicions should pay attention to the QOL of patient in the early stage of MS and NMO and predict the influencing factors on the QOL of patient, so as to conduct intervention and psychological counseling in the early stage and to guarantee patients’ social function with maximum possibilities.
