Objective We conducted the present study to assess the clinical usefulness of themeasurement of cysteine leukotriene (CysLTs) concentration in serum as a diagnosticpredictor to screen patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS)in children. Methods Serum CysLTs concentration were measured with ELASA kit inseventy-five patients with snoring before performing polysomnography(PSG).Subsequently all the subjects underwent PSG test. Forty-one subjects werediagnosed as having OSAHS,and thirty-four subjects were without OSAHS.Thesethirty-four non-OSAHS subjects served as control group. During the OSAHS group,twenty-five subjects were the Han nationality,twelve subjects were the Uyghurnationality. According to AHI,the OSAHS group will be divided into three groups,which are light, moderate, heavy. And the serum CysLTs of the OSAHS group will betaken to correlation analysis with the sleep respiratory parameters.Compare with the PSGresults,assess the clinical usefulness of the measurement of CysLTs concentration inserum as a diagnostic predictor to screen patients with OSAHS in children.Results (1)The serum CysLTs levels of OSAHS group [(683.102±89.825) pg/mL] was significantlyhigher than the control group [(461.985±84.951)pg/mL](P<0.05). And it was correlatedpositively with Apnea Hyponea Index (AHI), longest apnea time (LAT), sleep apnea lowaeration time (LHT)(r=0.417、0.422、0.208, P<0.05), but correlated negatively withthe lowest oxygen saturation (LSaO2) and the mean oxygen saturation(MSaO2)(r=0.192、0.255, P<0.05).(2) The severe OSAHS group’s serum CysLTs level[(773.118±92.015)pg/mL] was significantly higher than the moderate OSAHSgroup[(712.144±41.331)pg/mL](P <0.05), and much more significantly higher than the mild OSAHS group [(642.206±77.250) pg/mL(P <0.05).(3) when the CysLTs serumlevel was560.872pg/mL,there was the best critical point, there were the highestsensitivity rate (92.7%) and specificity rate (94.1%), and the lowest misdiagnosis rate andthe false dismissal rate, diagnose accordance rate was93.3%. Conclusion These findingssuggest that the serum CysLTs level of OSAHS children was higher the controlgroup,and closely related with the severity of OSAHS, and closely with the severity ofOSAHS. There was difference in serum CysLTs level between different nationalities’OSAHS patients. The serum CysLTs level of the Han nationality was higher than theUygur nationality. The serum level of CysLTs could be used as a predictor in screeningOSAHS children and a biological marker of the severity of OSAHS children.
