[Objective] To investigate the biochemical changes of seminal plasma in infertile patients with varicocele.[Methods] The seminal plasma samples from69infertile men with varicocele,34follow-up of infertile men with varicocele having done the Varicocelectomy, and20fertile men were measured for acid phosphatase, fructose, zinc, L-carnitine and alpha-1,4glucosidase.[Results] The concentration of acid phosphatase in seminal plasma from men with normal fertility was not significant from infertile men with varicocele (P>0.05).The difference of seminal plasma fructose levels in the two groups was not significant (P>0.05).The difference of the zinc level in seminal plasma between infertile group with varicocele and fertile group was significant (P<0.05).The difference of the alpha-1,4glucosidase and L-carnitinelevel in seminal plasma between the two groups was significant (P<0.01). The concentration of acid phosphatase and fructose in seminal plasma from the preoperative men was not significant from the postoperative men. The difference of the zinc and alpha-1,4glucosidase and L-carnitine level in seminal plasma between the preoperative men and the postoperative men was significant.[Conclusion] Varicocele can result in infertility by decreasing the concentrations of zinc, alpha-glucosidase and L-carnitine in seminal plasma.
