Nonspecific protein adsorption is a major challenge for biomaterial application.. It could cause many adverse biological cascades and impede normal healing processes. In recent years, zwitterionic-based materials such as poly(2-methacry-loyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine)(pMPC), poly(sulfobetaine)(pSB), and poly(carboxybetaine)(pCB) have been considered to possess excellent biological compatibility, nonfouling properties, and higher stability than PEG due to their strong hydration ability.In this work, carboxybetaine ester analogue (CBE) was synthesized as hydrolysis precursor. A novel biocompatible nonstick polymer film was prepared by copolymerization of CBE and small partial poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) for cross-linking by hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), which is highly resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption via the interfacial hydrolysis of ester groups by NaOH solution.The hydrophilicity of7.5%PEGMA-based polymer film was improved via the hydrolysis of CBE. The film showed a significant reduction in protein adsorption (<6%) over6hours. A small hydrophobic drug, aspirin, can be incorporated into the new polymer and slowly released to inhibit microorganism growth while the new wound dressing showed excellent cytocompatibility and good nonstick capability,In addition,3-methacryloxypropyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane (TRIS) was introduced to p(CBE-PEGMA) to control the swelling property of polymer film. A small amount of additional TRIS can dramaticelly improve the water resistance of polymer film, while its high resistance to protein adsorption remain the same.After all, this new nonstick polymer offers great potential for an antimicrobial wound dressing and other applications, due to its high resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and mammalian cell attachment, low cytotoxicity after a quick hydrolysis.
