Background:Hand, foot and mouth disease(HFMD) is caused by various enteroviruses. Most sick children with critical HFMD manifest high fever and nervous system damage, which may lead to death. At present, the commonly used method to assess severity of pediatric disease is pediatric critical illness score(PCIS). However, PCIS lacks assessment of nervous system damage and temperature, which are very important for evaluation of critical pediatric HFMD cases. So there are some limitations in using PCIS to assess critical HFMD cases in children. Based on PCIS, the development of pediatric critical HFMD score has important significance in pediatric practice. Methods:Based on PCIS, pediatric critical HFMD score was made by adding assessment of temperature and nervous system damage. Through retrospecitve analysis to critical HFMD cases of2008-2010year, the determining values were set for critical and extremely critical cases. Three years’data of before and after implementation of pediatric critical HFMD score were compared. Results:After the implementation of pediatric critical HFMD score, the success rate of rescure, the incidence of neurological sequel, the mortality were significantly different by comparing with critical HFMD cases of2008-2010year.Conclusions:Pediatric critical HFMD score can effectively and accurately assess the severity of HFMD. Its implementation can increase the success rate of rescure, decrease the incidence of neurological sequel and the mortality of HFMD.
