Objective: Comparative study the clinical outcome after percutaneouskyphoplasty using Genex liquid artificial bone and PMMA for thoracolumbarfractures. Methods: From January2011to February2012, forty patients ofpercutaneous kyphoplasty for thoracolumbar fractures were enrolled in thisretrospective studies. these patients were divided into2groups. A group (Genexliquid artificial bone group) including20patients,21vertebrae, including12males and8females, mean age of48.57±4.36(24-59)years. B group (PMMAgroup) including20patients,22vertebrae, including8males and12females,mean age of58.36±4.78(50-73)years old. Clinical outcome of the two groupswas assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the OswestryDisability Index (ODI), Percentage of Anterior Vertebral Height (AVH%),Percentage of Posterior Vertebral Height (PVH%), The angle of the injuredvertebral, Kyphosis angles and Sagittal Index (SI), were measured usingplain-film x-rays, We introduce the concept of the hollow rate of injuredvertebral, further analysis the relationship between the hollow rate of injuredvertebral and the loss of correction postoperative. Results: Statistically significant improvements were found respectively ina visual analogue scale, the oswestry disability index, percentage of anteriorvertebral height (AVH%), percentage of posterior vertebral height (PVH%), theangle of the injured vertebral, kyphosis angles and sagittal index (SI) of the pre- and post-operative assessments in A and B group(P<0.05), and have notstatistical significance comparison among the time period postoperative(P>0.05). It has not statistical significance comparison between A group and Bgroup(P>0.05). But have not statistical significance were found percentage ofposterior vertebral height (PVH%) of the pre-and post-operative assessmentsin A and B group(P>0.05), there is no relationship between the hollow rate ofinjured vertebral and the loss of correction postoperative in liquid artificialbone group. Conclusions: Percutaneous kyphoplasty using liquid artificial bone andPMMA for thoracolumbar fractures is effective and safe. which canexpeditiously relieve pain and improvement of mobility. Postoperativefollow-up found that vertebral height and angle of the two groups of patientswere slightly lost, but the liquid artificial bone group lost slightly higher. thereis no relationship between the hollow rate of injured vertebral and the loss ofcorrection postoperative in liquid artificial bone group.
