Objective: To investigate possible associated risk factors of postoperativepulmonary complication(PPC) after esophageal cancer resection, in order toprovide the basis for reducing the incidence of PPC and individualizedprevention. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of859patients treatedwith esophagectomy Surgeries from June1986to June2012in the thoracicsurgery department of Affiliated Tumour Hospital of Guang xi MedicalUniversity, and observed the rate of PPC. All possible factors influencing theresult were included in our research. The risk factors of PPC was used byunivariate analysis. The Independent risk factors of PPC were evaluated bymultiple logistic regression analysis.Result:144patients had pulmonary complication, the majority of whichwere nosocomial pneumonia (9.90%), pleural effusion (5.47%) and respiratoryfailure (2.10%). Univariate analysis showed that risk factors of postoperativepulmonary complication were associated with age, Long-term heavy smoking, diabetes, History of tuberculosis, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA)score≥3, BMI<18kg/m2,on lung ventilation, and FVC, FVC%pred,FEV1,FEV1%pred and FEV1/FVC%before operation (P<0.05).Theresults of logistic regression analysis showed that independent risk factors forpostoperative pulmonary complication were associated with age, Long-termheavy, smoking, diabetes, History of tuberculosis, American Society ofAnesthesiology (ASA) score, on lung ventilation, and FEV1%pred (P<0.05).Conclusions: The age, Long-term heavy smoking, diabetes, History oftuberculosis, ASA score, one lung ventilation, and FEV1%pred are independentrisk factors for pulmonary complication after esophagectomy Surgeries. In orderto decrease the PPC rate, High-risk patients having independent risk factors, especially having multiple independent risk factors should be individualizedperioperative intervention.Pay attention to improve patients’ preoperativepreparation and organ function status. Guide patients to exercise effectivelylung function.
