Prescriptions corresponding to Syndromes are the prerequisite of assuring clinical effects. Clarifying the prescriptions and syndromes of every classical famous prescription is an important task of prescription literature research of TCM.We choose Xiaoyaosan from Formularies of Bureau of People’s Welfare Pharmacy as the subject of the research, which is used frequently with reliable and exact effect. The method includes literature investigation, statistics of frequency and theoretical analysis. On the literature basis of ancient and modern medical treatise, formula, medical records and journals, we completely and systematically unearth, sort out, induct and analyze the causes of disease, pathological mechanism and compositons from the Xiaoyaosan, its Categorized Formula and case records recorded by the ancestor. The results of the research are as the following: the liver’s lack of blood and spleen’s weakness are primary causes of symptoms of Xiaoyaosan. Yin deficiency, fire-heat, depression of qi, blood stasis, phlegm-dampness and food are the secondary pathological factors. Therefore, the symptoms of Xiaoyaosan usually appears in those adult women who are slim, and whose faces are yellow or cyan. There are three groups of the basic symptoms: pale lips, scanty menstruation, thin color and amenorrhea, which is the sign of blood deficiency, swelling, ache of chest and breasts, depression and bitter taste, the sign of failure of liver to convey and disperse, fatigue, sweating, poor appetite and abdominal distension with straining. The most commonly changeable symptoms of Prescriptions and Syndromes of Xiaoyaosan are: fire-heat sympotoms, (feverish sensation over five centres tidal fever, bone streaming, night sweating, flushed cheeks, red eyes and dry throat, etc.), bleeding (such as bleeding of nose and gums, hemoptysis, bloody urine, bloody stool, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, etc.), pains (such as headache, pains of eyes, ears, back, stomach, hypochondrium, abdomen, waist, limbs, teeth, or painful menstuation, etc.), retained fluide syndromes (dizziness, flustered, and edema, etc.), phlegm syndromes such as expectoration, nodule (scrofula, lingual nodule, breast nodule, abdominal nodule, etc.), indigestion(halitosis, aphtha, etc.) The conditions of tongue and pulse are: the cyanotic tongue or pink tongue and the weak (thin and soggy )and taut pulse. This paper argues that, if there is one or more than one symptoms of each group primary symptoms, or there are two or more symptoms of changeable ones, the symptoms of Xiaoyaosan appears. Moreover, this paper makes a presumption of the sort of diseases in modern medicine that may have the high possibility to be Prescriptions and Syndromes of Xiaoyaosan.
