Films and TV programs serve as a major entertainment in the modernworld for a long time. Plenty of students also consider English films andTV programs as one of the best media to learn English and the culture. Inparallel with rapid economic growth, greater need for the knowledge ofthe world has emerged in China. The E-C translation of the films and TVprograms which are brought in from English-speaking countries plays asignificant role in meeting this new requirement. Although the title of thefilms and TV programs serves as only one little tiny part of the wholeprocession of marketing the films and TV programs, they are the onlydirect bridge between the audience and the producers. Therefore the E-Ctranslations of the titles decide if the films and TV programs can beaccepted in the Chinese market. Considering the difficulties, thetranslation of film and TV program titles requires a better translationstrategy. This thesis holds that the translators should employ Nida’s functionalequivalence (FE) theory during translating the film and TV program titles. The author, first of all, will present Nida’s functional equivalence theorysystematically including introducing its origination, basic principles anddefects, etc. Then this thesis will give a general introduction of the TVprogram and film titles including the features and functions. Althoughmany scholars have explored this filed and applied various theories, they have never studied the translation of film and TV program titles with theNida’s functional equivalence theory deeply and consider thereconstruction as a significant part. In order to fill this blank, the authorwill review the previous study and examine the current existing problems. At last, this thesis will discuss these present problems of the E-Ctranslations of the film and TV program titles with the hope to find outthe most effective translation strategy.Comparing the basic principles of Nida’s functional equivalence theoryand other existing theories such as metaphrase and paraphrase, the authorargues that the translators should use the Nida’ s functional equivalencetheory during translating the film and TV program titles. It is sincerely hoped that this thesis will enlighten translators whendealing with E-C translation of film and TV program titles and make alittle contribution to the progression of the researches in this field, although some new ideas have been raised and a little improvement hasbeen made, there’s still more left to be accomplished and polished.
