From1970s, discourse analysis has been gradually becoming the hot topic in the field of linguistics. Discourse coherence is the core study in the field of discourse analysis research. The methods of analysis of discourse coherence can be summarized into three kinds:the static, the dynamic and the multidimensional approaches. With the development of cognitive science and cognitive linguistics, the dynamic approach is adopted by most scholars. However, the dynamic method emphasizes the dynamic scene in the discourse, and centers on the linear structure of discourse, neglecting the hierarchical structure. In the thesis, based on the Event-domain Cognitive Model and Mental Frame Theory, a theoretical framework Current Event-domain Discourse Space (CEDS) for the analysis of the news discourse coherence will be presented. An analysis of news discourses is curried out to exemplify and validate the framework which I have presented. CEDS has the feature of ECM, which emphasizes the hierarchical structure of discourse, and reveals the process of the discourse development from the linear perspective. Meanwhile, the model emphasizes both the static and dynamic scene in the discourses. In the thesis, the study bases on the EVENT to understand and analyze the discourse, and presents the macro model of discourses covered by EVENT.The objectives of the study can be summarized into the following three points:first, to provide a new approach for the analysis of discourse coherence, which both from dynamic and static perspectives, at the same time, covers the linear and hierarchical structures; second, to develop the theoretical framework of CEDS Model which helps to analyze the Macro coherence mode embedded in news reports; third, to propose ways aiming at foster the language awareness of coherence in news reports so as to make readers and listeners understand the discourse profoundly. The results of the thesis reveal that the theoretical framework of CEDS that I have proposed is applicable in the analysis of discourse coherence. The findings also reflect that the Macro-view of the analysis of discourse coherence can give us an overview of the whole EVENT that contains many different but closely related discourses which is called sub-event in the CEDS Model. Meanwhile, it can improve students’language proficiencies in terms of reading, writing and translation skills.
