A Report On The Translation Of Medicine River

The novel Medicine River is written by Thomas King in1990. It shows the life of Canadian Aboriginal. Although this novel has been filmed, there is no Chinese version both at home and abroad. This translation project is the first English-Chinese translation of the novel. The aim is to let readers to think deeper about the life situation of Canadian Aboriginal.There are all together eighteen chapters. This is a translation project report for the first and second chapter of the novel Medicine River. These two chapters are the beginning of the whole story. The report consists of four parts. Part one introduces the background and the objective of the project. Part two is the analysis of source text, consisting of introduction to the author Thomas King and the source text Medicine River. Part three shows the translation difficulties and translation skills of annotation, conversion, addition and omission. Translation difficulties cover how to use free translation when literal translation can not reach the expected effect. Part four is the conclusion, including experiences from the project and conclusion of the project. I hope this translation project report can lay the foundation for other translators who want to translate the novel Medicine River.
