When learning Chinese, native Javanese encounter certain problems during the learning process. The nature of these problems is related to the specific characteristics of the Javanese language,specifically phonetic, graphical, and grammatical. The difference between the two languages is such that Javanese speakers find it quite difficult to master the nuances of Chinese, suggesting that such students must work at all areas to promote a holistic understanding and comprehension of the Chinese language. In addition to individual study habits, students’ progress is the responsibility of the school and teachers, where the classroom environment provided plays an important role in language improvement. Specifically, use of multimedia, and an array of pedagogical methods contribute to quicker language acquisition. These factors are interrelated and inseparable; each affects and is affected by progress and development of related factorsThis essay will introduce the history and present state of the Javanese language, as well as the development of Chinese language education in Indonesia. From a modern viewpoint, this study will comparatively analyze both Javanese and Chinese, finally analyzing the crucial points of study for Javanese speakers in terms of grammar, phonetics and written language. On this basis, we can indicate an ideal study strategy in Chinese for native Javanese speakers that accounts for the inherent characteristics of their mother language. In compiling this research, this essay relies on surveys directed toward native Javanese speakers, as well as the personal experiences of the author, thus producing specific and proper suggestions. The purpose of this essay is to assist Chinese educators understand the potential problems one faces when teaching Chinese to native Javanese speakers. It also is a valuable resource to students who want to master proper study methods and understand the crucial elements of successful Chinese language study.
