| This is a report on the translation of the Chapter One, Chapter Two and part of Chapter Three of The Kile Runner by Khaled Hosseini. These chapters are mainly about the childhood lives of Amir, the protagonist and narrator of the story. He and Hassan who is the son of his father’s servant spend good days in Kabul and they were best friends then. Amir’s father, a wealthy merchant is often harshly critical of Amir, considering him weak and lacking in courage. The main contents of this report are divided into four parts:Part One is description of the translation project, including origin of the project, objectives of the project, significance of the project and structure of the report. Part Two is the background of the source text, including introduction of the author, main contents of the source text and analysis of the source text. Part Three is about difficulties during translation and the methods to solve them. Because of a lack of background cultural knowledge and religious knowledge, translator meets with a lot of problems such as misunderstanding and the right words to choose. Under the guidance of the criterion "faithfulness and expressiveness", translator uses some translation methods including literal translation, free translation, diction and annotation. Part Four concludes with the enlightenments and unsolved problems in the translation project. |
