Thematic Progression On The Introduction Of Science Thesis

So far, basically the studies of functional linguistics have divided discourse analysis into four parts——(1) the analysis of classification of Thematic Structure and the classification of Thematic Progression and (2) the analysis of classification of Thematic Progression and analysis of the syntactic structure. The author consists that thematic progression mode belongs to the coherence mode, but because of its sequence construct is equivalent to the basic framework of discourse or paragraph, thematic progression mode is different from the other coherence method. Although the theories of system functional linguistic are in continuous development and improvement, the theoretical analysis of specific discourse genre is of rare.In the academic conference abroad, and both in microstructure and macrostructure, the introduction in Chinese English papers is very familiar with the introduction in native English papers, which indicates their authors have better mastered the writing of the disciplinary papers Introduction. However, there have still existed some grammatical problems in their science thesis. Considering the30introductions collected randomly from Elsevier ScienceDirect as research corpus, this study analyzes the thematic structure of these30introductions and divides thematic progression into two parts, namely upon the suspect of thematic structure, the scientific and engineering students are bias to Simple Theme (total299, accounting for54%), next is Multiple Theme (total186, accounting for33%), the last one is clausal theme (total72, accounting for3%). Meanwhile, in clausal layer, the common thematic progression modes are——Parallel Thematic Progression, Connective Thematic Progression and Derived Thematic Progression. In paragraph layer, the common thematic progression modes are Parallel Thematic Progression, Concentrative Thematic Progression, Proceeding Thematic Progression and Crossal Thematic Progression. In addition, According to the analysis, the author found that there are many leaping thinking layer which totally occupies64in the30introductions, namely the improper or misplaced thematic structure. By analyzing the thematic structure and thematic progression of the corpus, this study detected that the introductions of science thesis have fixed writing format. The features of the thematic structures in corpus are simplification and facilitation and the thematic progression modes are close coherence and proceeding in each clause and sentence.
