Processing Complex Sentences In Translating English Social Science Literature Into Chinese

The translation project report mainly describes the difficulties—complex sentences—encountered during the process of translating. Translating complex sentences from English to Chinese has always been an important and difficult aspect in translation practice. Based on analyzing original text and completely understanding its original meaning, the translator holds that such kind of sentences should be handled carefully so as to represent the original meaning in conformity with the norm of target language. Compared with sentences written in Chinese, those written in English are full of complicated structures and more flexibly positioned diverse modifiers. Therefore, analyzing and understanding the original text becomes the first and critical step during the process of translating complex sentences from English to Chinese. The second step is translating the complex English sentences into a version faithful to and corresponding to the meaning of original text by adopting some appropriate translation techniques such as sequential translation, reversing translation, sentence division, sentence combination and comprehensive method.
