As the classic aria in the second act of Puccini’s opera "Tosca", the lyric soprano aria "Vissi d’arte, Vissi d’amore", sung by Tosca, has been widely sung, for it is the most difficult and representative work of this opera. The melody of this song is elegant and the harmonic instruments are exquisite and rich, which highlight the hero’s distinct personality. Beginning with recitative, this song enthusiastically pours out the hero’s passion for art and loyalty to love. With a mild and gentle melody, the aria part depicts the devout praying and its middle period employs several tercet consecutively to form a serials of rhetorical questions, which vividly portrays the hero’s helpless misery. The end explosively gives vent to the painful emotion with the aid of treble, followed by a fall of cadence and the lasting sound of sobbing, which lively resembles Tosca’s nearly collapsing despair. The author takes as the research object of this paper this song performed on the graduation solo concert. Based on a large number of materials and references which are referred to for the preparation of the concert and the author’s own comprehension and performance perception of this song, the paper intends to analyze and explore this work in terms of its composition background, art style and the singing skills with the purpose of having a more precise interpretation of this work so as to achieve the integration of the theory and the practice.
