Akutagawa Ryunosuke is an excellent short story writer in Japan, he is well known as The Devilof Taisyo Time. Kappa is the longest one of his short stories. With the iron of various clownism and ridicule,It nearly be thought the author’s autobiography. Works talked about the Kappa’s growth situation, familysystem, love, and other things of daily life by a mental patient with the humorous language. Through theworks we can see Kappa’s daily life clearly. The politics, economy, art, law, capitalist exploitation, war andother aspects also be analysized in detail by sharp language. Then we can see the repression andexploitation to the Kappa and art. Kappa’s egoism also be exposed. We can know there is no religiousbelief in Kappa’s mind. The works will be on the absurdity of the show most incisive, to satire the darksociety and capitalist oppression of the people, and be accompanied by the author’s own experiences, theauthor’s thought, artistic conception, and outlook on life attitude all into this work, The works is the mostcompleted to understand Akutagawa Ryunosuke. In this paper, using the theory of defamiliarization, textanalysis, comparative method to analyse Kappa and The Cat City comparatively and then sum up theideological and artistic features of this works.This paper is divided into four chapters, the first part mainly introduces the life of the author, thepresent research situation of Kappa; the first chapter talks about the origin, the process of evolution and thesignificance of Kappa, explains why the author choose kappa; In the second chapter, the hidden AkutagawaRyunosuke will be seen from the text; the third chapter associates from kappa’s society to the dark reality inJapan; the fourth chapter is the innovation place of this paper, using the theory of defamiliarization tocompare Kappa and The Cat City, From the aspects of theme, rhetoric methods of Defamiliarization in twoworks, and then combined with the text of the two works, criticism, irony in the different intensity, andfinally summed up the ideological and artistic features of Kappa.
